The Nelson Tasman Housing Trust is honoured to be involved in the new papakāinga development at Te Āwhina Marae in Motueka. The trust has a management contract with the marae to manage the tenancies at the papakāinga, which will eventually be made up of 20 affordable rental homes. The first four homes have been completed and the tenants will move in this week. The rest of the homes will be completed in stages over the next four months.
Nelson Tasman Housing Trust director Carrie Mozena said the partnership with the marae was a good fit, consistent with the trust's mission and philosophy. It made sense for the trust to offer its expertise in tenancy management to assist the marae with its vision of connecting whānau with their whenua, she said.
"The Nelson Tasman Housing Trust wants to see more houses built in the region to serve whānau in need and we support Māori organisations to develop papakāinga. This papakāinga will be great for whānau, allowing them to benefit from living at the marae and also contribute to the life of the marae.''
The contract is for 12 months initially, while Te Āwhina Marae goes through the process of registering as a Community Housing Provider. Once it is registered it will take over managing the tenancies itself. Under the contract the marae is responsible for selecting the tenants, while the trust administers the tenancies.
The papakāinga will be a mix of two, three and four-bedroom rental homes. It will also have a shared community space, where people can gather for family events and hui.
