The Nelson City Council has announced it will grant $850,000 towards the Nelson Tasman Housing Trust's latest housing development in Tahunanui.
The development will see five new rental homes built for people on low incomes in Muritai St. The council's grant has been made from its $12 million housing reserve.
In announcing the grant Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese said it was “about answering the call from the community for affordable housing as quickly as possible”.
The trust has already started work on the project, removing an old house from the property. Four 2-bedroom rentals and one four-bedroom rental will be built in its place. The project is estimated to cost $2.5 million and the trust has received funding from a philanthropic donor to match the council grant.
