Our six new rental homes in Murphy St, Nelson are now completed and will be ready for tenants to move into soon. They were blessed at an opening ceremony this week. Archdeacon Harvey Whakaruru performed the blessing and Nelson MP Rachel Boyack declared the homes open.
Nelson Tasman Housing Trust director Carrie Mozena says she's thrilled with the homes, which are designed to be warm, dry and energy-efficient. "We know people will be comfortable in these homes and will benefit from a healthy living environment and reduced power costs,'' she says.
The two-bedroom homes are designed to a Homestar 6 standard, which means they are built to higher energy-efficiency standards than those set by the building code. As well as having more insulation than required, they have photovoltaic panels, to reduce the cost of power for residents. The trust is in the final stages of confirming tenants for the homes and most are expected to move in as soon as possible.
The development cost $2.4 million and was mostly funded by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development. An anonymous donor also supported the project, by helping the trust buy the land.
