The Nelson Tasman Housing Trust is building six new 2-bedroom homes, which are expected to be completed by mid-December 2021. The homes are in the Nelson suburb of Toi Toi and the trust expects they will be in high demand.
Nelson Tasman Housing Trust director Carrie Mozena said the housing crisis in Nelson-Tasman was as severe as ever, and there was a huge need for affordable, healthy rental homes.
"We are committed to tackling the housing crisis by increasing the supply of affordable and social housing for people on low incomes,'' she said.
The homes are designed to be sunny and warm. They are sited to face north, and will have heat pumps, double glazing, full insulation and photovoltaic panels (to reduce the cost of power). Two of the homes will be wheelchair accessible, to cater for people with limited mobility.
Tenants will need to be approved to be on the Ministry of Social Development Housing Register, since funding for the project has been provided by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development. Prospective tenants can apply here.
The total cost of the project is $2.5 million. An anonymous donor helped the trust buy the land, which enabled the trust to gain government funding to support the construction costs.
The new homes will bring the trust's total number of rental homes in Nelson and Richmond to 50.
